Jonay Martín is a versatile musician who has performed with a wide variety of projects and styles.
After exploring pop and rock music, Jonay Martín discovered the legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix and, with him, the expressiveness and improvisation that made this unique musician famous. Through Hendrix, he was introduced to jazz, guided by one of his greatest influences, John Coltrane.
Jonay Martín later began his formal musical training as a disciple of some of the most sought-after and relevant musicians on the island—key figures in the Canary jazz scene such as Manolo Rodríguez, Ruskin Herman and Eliseo Lloreda, who introduced him to the master Jim Hall, a major influence on him to this day.
Additionally, the music of Frank Zappa made a deep impact on him. Through Zappa’s extensive discography and influences, he discovered contemporary music.
Pierre Boulez, Igor Stravinsky, Béla Bartók and Claude Debussy opened the door to textures and new ways of combining composition and improvisation.
In parallel, Jonay Martín has performed and collaborated with numerous renowned jazz, folk and singer-songwriter figures from the Canary Islands, including David K. Williams, Felu Morales, Eliseo Lloreda, Juan Carlos León, Kike Perdomo, Idafe Pérez, Octavio Hernández, José Carlos Machado, Fabiola Socas, Chago Melián, Esther Ovejero, Chiqui Pérez and Julio Tejera, among others.
In recent years, Jonay Martín has deepened his most creative side by producing original compositions that diverge from more traditional jazz styles.
Among his favorites in this ongoing exploration are composers such as Kenny Werner, Ben Monder, Wolfgang Muthspiel and Olivier Messiaen.
This journey has allowed him to explore his compositional voice, sharing original pieces and recording his first album as a leader, “Anixua” (2018).
His musical development has also included studying—both in person and online—with some of today’s leading modern guitarists, such as Jim Hall, Lage Lund, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Gilad Hekselman, Ben Monder, Nelson Veras and Daniel Santiago. He has also performed with masters of free improvisation and instant composition such as Carlos Costa and Nasim López-Palacios (Jonay Martín Trio Beyond), as well as the great guitarist Tony Peña, with whom he recorded the 2020 album “Endless Cycle”, available exclusively on Bandcamp.
Among his recordings, the albums as leader “Anixua” (2015) and “Autorretrato” (2023) stand out.
In duo format, he leads the “Ahora Project” with Italian guitarist Lorenzo Cominoli, releasing the albums “Ahora” (2022) and “The Ocean Stone” (2025).
He has also released three singles and the new album “Live in La Orotava” (2025, Tiny Moon Records) in collaboration with Albert Bover.
